What Not to Eat When Pregnant

Cravings are frequent due to the imbalance of the hormones, but some foods are unsafe to eat after conceiving. Here are some foods which one should always avoid when pregnant:

Fish Containing Mercury

Mercury is harmful as it converts into Methylmercury in the body causing the brain damage with problems in the development of the baby. Swordfish, Shark, King Mackerel have high levels of mercury and should be avoided instead eat Catfish, Salmon, Canned light tuna and cod having low levels of mercury.

The US Food and Drug Administration states that one can eat 8-12 ounces of fish in a week while limiting the consumption of the Albacore to 6 ounces a week.

Unpasteurized Milk

Avoid drinking Unpasteurized milk as it contains Listeria, Salmonella, E.coli, and Cryptosporidium that can be harmful.

Drink non-dairy milk like Soy milk, Almond milk, Oat, and Rice milk as they contain nutrients and are often safe.

Seafood

Avoid eating smoked seafood because they have the bacteria called ‘Listeria’ causing Listeriosis that could make ill and even result in miscarriage or the stillbirth. Moreover, they also provide high salt levels which increase the BP and swelling.

Raw Shellfish

Do not eat fresh seafood like Oysters, Mussels, and clams because they contain toxins and viruses making one ill.

Undercooked or Raw Eggs

Don’t include soft-boiled eggs in the diet because they have Salmonella bacteria causing food poisoning with Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Vomiting, Headache and fever which is though harmless but weakens up the immune system impacting the development. Aioli sauce, Desserts, Caesar dressings made at home, Ice creams, and Custards are unhealthy.

Poultry And Raw Meat

Both can cause Toxoplasmosis containing the parasite ‘Toxoplasma’ which may develop the symptoms of Flu resulting in miscarriage or the death of the fetus. Eat varieties cooked at home in temperatures around 160 degrees F for ground meats, 165 degrees F for chicken breasts and 145 degrees F for whole cuts.

Deli Meats

Deli meats like cold cuts and hot dogs contain the bacteria ‘listeria’ which moves to the placenta and develop severe complications thus one should consider eating them after they reheat.

Soft Cheese

Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Camembert, Feta, Queso Blanco, Queso Fresco, and Panela are soft cheeses which are not healthy unless pasteurized. Prefer eating hard cheeses like Swiss and Cheddar which lack water and will not transfer the bacteria.

 Vegetables And Fruits Which Are Unwashed

Those unwashed have the toxoplasma parasite which affects the soil on which they grow. Rinse them thoroughly before eating and peel away damaged part. Consider boiling the leafy vegetables once before eating.

Raw Sprouts

Mung bean, Radish, Sunflower, Onion, and clover allow E.Coli to enter the sports which may cause infections and stillbirth. Prefer to eat the cooked sprouts rather the raw one.

Foods causing Allergy

Wheat, Soy, Eggs, Fish, Walnuts, and Shellfish may cause allergy during early trimester and Asthma in the future.

Salads Made At Resturant

 

The seafood and Caesar salad dressing carry bacterias which leads to food poisoning. Avoid eating the contaminated food which may result in the symptoms of the flu and severe risks.  Eat home-made salads for safety and chop the vegetables on clean surfaces.

Juices

Unpasteurized vegetable and fruit juices carry Salmonella and E.coli which may be risky if unwashed well. Drink pasteurized juices made at home.

High-Amount Of Caffeine

High-levels of it could cause low birth weight and miscarriage. One should limit the number to 200 mg a day in chocolate and tea. According to some studies, it might cause early delivery and other related symptoms, therefore, avoid drinking ice tea and alcohol when pregnant.

Supplements and Herbal Teas

Angelica, Kava Kava, Borage oil and Mugwort are some herbs which may cause problems. Black walnut, Echinacea, Goldenseal, Senna, Motherwort, Fenugreek, Saw Palmetto, Licorice Root and Wormwood might cause miscarriage and hence are unsafe. Other herbs like Aloe, Evening Primrose and Ginseng are also risky. Consult the doctor on taking excess Dandelion, Chamomile or Nettles Teas. Have a cup of herbal tea daily to avoid any complications.

Foods in Containers

Foods in the Can like sodas and vegetables are unhealthy because of the bisphenol A affecting the Endocrine activity of the fetus and develops cancer, liver problems, heart diseases and fertility problems. The canned soup or pasta contain high levels which are unhealthy to the mother. Eat fruits, fish and fresh vegetables which lack BPA with washing the canned foods before eating.

Foods Rich In Nitrates

Cut down on eating sandwiches, meats, bacon and hot dogs as they have the nitrates which improves the life of the shell while enhancing the color. They may also increase the risk of cancer in mothers. Eat foods which are cooked correctly for the safety.

Foods Containing Fat

Do not eat fast foods, frozen pizza, cookies, street foods, frosting and margarine to reduce the calorie intake by 1% as the increasing amount may result in obesity, heart problems, and preterm birth. Foods are having omega 6, omega 3 and nine fatty acids are essential.

Artificial Sweeteners

Saccharin and Aspartame are unhealthy if having Phenylketonuria (PKU) leading to the congenital disabilities. Use sugar which is natural instead of the artificial ones to stay safe.

Vitamins

One can remain high on iron, folic acid, and calcium but needs a careful step before taking the vitamins that are readily soluble in water as they can negatively impact the bowel movement.

Homemade Goodies

The cookies made in the home are unhealthy as the dough which is raw contains the bacteria which causes poisoning inside the body.

Licorice

Licorice (Mulethi) contains Glycyrrhizin causing developmental issues with allowing the path to the hormone causing stress. According to research, ADHD issues are a result of licorice and its side-effects which may also develop a high BP and early labor.

Leftovers

Avoid cold or hot foods kept in the same room temperature till 2 hours. Eat fresh home cooked meals instead.

Fruits to Avoid

  • Papaya: Contains latex developing uterine contractions
  • Black grapes: Builds heat in the body
  • Pineapple: Includes bromelain softening the cervix causing early labor

Vegetables to Avoid

  • Eggplant: May lead to abortion
  • Cabbage and lettuce: Foodborne illnesses

Tips

Due to weak immunity, a woman needs to be careful of the bacteria and parasites like Toxoplasma, Listeriosis, Gondii that may develop the risks including early labor, stillbirth, miscarriage and other health issues:

  • Always wash the chopping boards, hands and the knives before using them
  • Clean the refrigerator often
  • Cook all the eggs, fish and meat thoroughly
  • Reheat pre-cooked foods and meats at temperature 165 degrees F before eating

What Can You Eat During Pregnancy?

  • Fresh vegetables and fruits like Apples, Berries, Melons, Strawberries, Kale, Spinach, Broccoli, Cabbage, Swiss chard, and Oranges
  • Pasteurized milk and yogurt, cooked soft blue cheese (Gorgonzola)
  • Whole grains and cereals like Rice, Wheat, Bread, and Oatmeal
  • Cooked eggs
  • Chicken and meat, Chicken breasts, Lean and Fat-free meat
  • Lentils, Black beans, Pinto Beans, and Chickpeas
