Round the globe, people get affected by the very discomforting condition known as Trochanteric Bursitis. It is caused when bursa, the pouch filled with fluid and located near the joint close to the lateral top of the hip gets swollen. Mainly, outer side of the hip or thigh and buttock pains due to the swelling and makes it difficult for a person to get up from a chair or sit comfortably. Patient experiences worst kind of pain when he is lying on the impacted side and it may even develop if finger pressure is applied.
Trochanteric Bursitis Symptoms
Hip pain is the first indication which is caused by irritation of bursa and acts out on the outer thigh or the hip. The impacted side of the buttock is where the pain originates and the patient finds it painful to perform simple tasks like getting up from a chair.
Trochanteric Bursitis Causes
There could be several factors that could lead to Trochanteric Bursitis. The most common cause of the condition is hip injury or lying on the side injured for a long time. Over-use of the joints can lead to injury of the hip – these including walking, climbing or even standing for extended hours. Everyone knows how badly an incorrect posture can affect the body and Trochanteric Bursitis is one of its side effects. Bursitis often originates due to old age – the calcium deficiency in people leads to the development of the condition. In some cases, side effects from drugs or infection initiates the condition in people. Hip surgeries and implants could be a reason too.
Trochanteric Bursitis Diagnosis and Treatment
Trochanteric Bursitis is diagnosed by the doctors by making the patient stand on one of his legs and then on the other, followed by observation of the hip position. The source of pain induced could be identified by range-of-motion exam. Other than that, MRIs, X-Ray and Ultrasound is done to reveal inflammation. But these tests may be found ineffective in showing abnormalities.
This condition could be treated very effectively with rest. Rest doesn’t mean getting inactive altogether but reducing over-stress to the hip. The pain could be reduced by Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and even if this fails, steroids could be injected in the affected areas. Many find physical therapy as an easy and successful treatment to Trochanteric Bursitis.
When all the other treatment fails to improve the condition, doctors recommend a surgery to remove the bursa that is swollen; this surgery is called Bursectomy. The surgery is also performed to repair the muscle ruptures and to remove the loose material from the hip.
Trochanteric Bursitis Exercises
The stretching exercises can help improve the condition by relieving the patient of the pain. These exercises involve –
- Wall Squat – It is performed by standing straight facing the wall. A basket ball or any exercise ball is laid out on the back and the exerciser is supposed to lean on the wall with its support. Keeping the body in the upright position, squats are performed while making sure the thighs are parallel to the floor.
- Leg Raise – Leg raise is a simple exercise which could be done by lying down on the unaffected side of the hip and lifting the affected leg gently 8-9 inches from the floor while keeping the knees straight.
This condition if often misdiagnosed because the symptoms are quite similar to other musculoskeletal disorders. Still, if you have persistent pain in your hip making it difficult for you to carry out your daily activities, you should visit a doctor.
