Origin & Types

Brahmi word taken from the word “Brahman” means Consciousness of God. The plant has been mentioned since the 6th century AD in several old textbooks like sushrut Samhita, athrava-Veda, and Charaka Samhita. The varieties are subodhak, CIM-jagriti and pragyashakti are grown as perennials.

History

It is available in marshy and swamp regions of Sri Lanka, USA, China, Bangladesh, Florida, Vietnam, and Hawaii. In India, farmers grow in Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttrakhand, Karnataka, Orissa, Kerala, Bihar, Haryana, and Punjab.

Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri)

Description

Brahmi is a glabrous and creeping herb with rooting at the nodes. It has ovate leaves which are fleshy and sessile. The purple-white flowers are axillary and solitary having two bracteoles and short pedicles. It contains five sepals measuring 0.4 to 0.9 cm long. The capsule is ovoid and acute with two valves having numerous seeds that are irregular and pale.

Possible Side Effects

  1. The most common problem is an upset stomach.
  2. Avoid consuming on an empty stomach as it leads to cramping, bloating, diarrhea and nausea.
  3. In rare cases, it causes secretion in the lungs, urinary tract, and the stomach.
  4. In extreme cases, there is the occurrence of gastrointestinal blockage.

Cultivation & Propagation

Till the land to make it free from weeds and planked for leveling the field. For maximum yield, mix 10 tons per hectare of farmyard manure, 30kg per hectare of nitrogen, 40 kg per hectare of potash and 50 kg per hectare of phosphorus with the soil before plantation. After 40 to 45 days, mix nitrogen in two split doses in the soil.

The plant fits well with Kharif season’s rice-based cropping systems like rice-wheat, rice-pea-wheat, and rice-berseem-maize. Use dwarf rice varieties with the crop and plant them for five months. Irrigate the field on a weekly basis depending on the soil type and availability of water for maintaining a constant humidity in the ground.

For propagation, collect the shoot cuttings of 5 to 10 cm length having rootlets and internodes. The propagules multiply rapidly during monsoon and the seeds develop during October and November. One requires 70 kg of fresh 40000 propagules for plantation in 1 hectare of land.

Soil

The plant can resist different types of the soil if grown in wet and semi-shade areas. Clayey, clayey loam and near-neutral soils are best suited for growth. The crop grows well in soils having pH value 7.5 or more.

Health & Security

One requires four manual weeding when the crop is two weeks old. If we grow the crop around the year, keep the plant free from weeds during winter by watering at regular intervals. For controlling the weeds mix Butachlor 50 EC at the rate of 3 kg with 60 kg sand in 1 hectare of land in 4 to 5 cm thick standing water. Pests, pathogens, and insects do not affect the crop.

Harvesting & Storage of Brahmi Plant

Harvest is done after three months of the plantation wherein September to October is the ideal time for collection. Harvest the crop when it reaches a height of 20 to 30 cm. Uproot and scrape off the whole plant manually.

Dry the crop by spreading on clean sheets under the sun for four to five days and after that dry them under shade for a week. Store the dry produce in clean containers and avoid storing the crop for a longer duration as the bacoside content in the hay will diminish after 180 days of storage.

Due to its memory boosting and other miraculous properties it is widely available in all pharmaceutical brands. The plant is prevalent in every household, so marketing is effortless. Investment is quite less and the farmers receive a handsome profit.
